It’s hard not to think about religion. We study religion, or some form of it, all of our lives. Religion has a major influence on the growth of society, the relationships between people, and even individual performances in sports, academics, and other areas of life. On the subject of religion, there are hundreds of factors that help contribute to and shape our lives in various different ways. The study of religion helps us understand how to live and guide us about our lives and also about other religions.
Here are some reasons why we study religion
To understand ourselves
Religion gives us a sense of belongingness and provides meaning to our life. It helps us understand who we are and where we come from. It makes us realize that we are not alone in this world, but that there is someone who cares for us and will always be there for us no matter what happens.
To know God better
The study of religion enables us to know God better than any other means available today. This knowledge leads to a deeper understanding of oneself as well as God. it also helps one explore his/her relationship with God by providing guidance through difficult times in life when one feels lost or confused about his/her purpose in life or what he/she should be doing with his/her life.
To know others better
The study of religion helps us learn more about other people by introducing them to their ways of thinking, beliefs, practices, etc. This helps build bridges between people to fundamentally link and connect with each other.
To gain knowledge and insight into the human condition
Religion has a big part in understanding the human condition since people are shaped by religion’s morals and beliefs passed to its believers as teachings of their creator. It is an integral part of everyone’s lives, our civilization, and our very being as humans. Religion has shaped the majority of aspects of our lives, including how we relate with one another and view the world around us.
The reason why we study religion is similar to the reason why we study any other subject at the university. Various subjects are important for understanding another culture or profession. Religion gives us insights into many issues as diverse as anthropology, politics, law, history philosophy, and ethics. Eventually, you’ll be grateful for learning how to evaluate different concepts just like evaluating and understanding different religions’ claims.
However, this requires thoughtful consideration and careful evaluation without dismissing religious beliefs out of hand. it also means taking into account the important role that all religious people have in informing our societies, whether they are a member of a minority or of the dominant majority. Ultimately, where we come down in this debate will reveal a great deal about who we are as individuals in society.
